The dancers use refined hand gestures, controlled posture and expressive movement to tell stories drawn from Khmer mythology and the Reamker, Cambodia’s adaptation of the Ramayana. The imagery of the apsara can also be seen throughout the temples of Angkor, creating a natural connection between the monuments explored during the day and the performing arts experienced in the evening.

Outside the temples, Tonlé Sap offers another perspective on the region. The lake and its surrounding communities are shaped by Cambodia’s seasonal cycle of water, creating a landscape very different from Angkor. 

Exploring Siem Reap at a relaxed pace 

Siem Reap rewards a balanced approach. Angkor Wat can be the centrepiece of the trip without becoming the only experience, while Banteay Srei, Tonlé Sap, Khmer food and performing arts each reveal a different side of the region.
